The Broholmer: all you need to know
The Broholmer is a very rare dog, with no more than 1,500 subjects present on the whole planet, albeit known since the Middle Ages.
At that time the Broholmer was used for deer hunting in northern European countries and later in time it entered the large estates and courts of the Danish nobles as a guard dog.
But it was only towards the end of the 18th century, however, that the actual selection began with the decisive contribution of Niels Frederick Sehested (1813 – 1882) Count of Broholm, from which the breed takes its name, to reach official recognition. by FCI in 1982.
To get to know this rare and unknown Molosser, as aforementioned only 1500 specimens in the world, of which about fifty are present in our country, we went to ask Vanda Baldaccini to tell us about it.
For those unfamiliar with her, Vanda Baldaccini is the person who brought the Broholmer breed to Italy, as well as the only person who rears him with the affix “ della Breed of Fengur ”. If this is not enough, the breeding “of the Fengur lineage” has reached very ambitious goals both in the exhibition field – with the victory of one of its subjects in the 2015 world championship – and in the close collaboration with the Danish Club Broholmerselskabet for the protection and the spread of the breed.
